Gabriele Jacobs (1997) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cape Town. Between 2016 and 2022 they studied at UCT, completing an MFA with distinction from Michaelis school of fine art. Their work predominantly makes use of animal imagery to discuss contemporary concerns- both environmental and societal- exploring themes of queerness, ecology and care. Jacobs often refers to examples from the more-than-human world which contradict the heteronormative lens through which contemporary society has been framed by western hegemony. In these recent oil paintings, they have employed a more reductive approach to mark making, playing with ideas of ephemerality and the fugitive nature of life in our current time of overlapping crises. Jacobs has featured in various group shows in and around Cape Town since 2019, including the Investec Art fair (2020 and 2025). In 2021, they were the runner up in the New Breeds. In 2023 he was an artist in residence at the Nirox foundation and at Lemkus Gallery in Cape Town the following year.
