For me, painting is a journey that begins with no final destination in mind, unfolding spontaneously on the canvas. My approach is fast-paced, inspired by the Surrealists’ technique of automatic writing, allowing the process to be as surprising to me as it is to my audience. For me, the adventure of painting lies in the unpredictability of the process. I have recently shifted to oil painting. In my new large-scale oil paintings, I bring together my fascination with the world of coral reefs and my abstract practice. I do not “explore” anything; I let the painting guide me. As Cecily Brown says: “Paintings are always asking questions, and each painting asks its own set of questions. Every few moves you make, you’ve set up a whole set of new problems that you then have to answer. I want to leave that openness.”
