Soma Bognar is a Brighton-based artist visual artist. He completed the Turps Banana painting programme in East Sussex in 2025. His work, which offers a blend of comfort and grotesque imagery, delves into the subconscious, exploring the intersection of emotional depth and visual complexity. Having grown up in Hungary, Bognar draws on the rich traditions of Hungarian folklore and childhood tales, which subtly inform the symbolic and narrative elements of his paintings. Pareidolia plays a central role in his practice, creating an ongoing conversation between his subconscious and the materiality of paint. Originally trained as a harpist at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Bognar transitioned from professional music to visual arts around 2020. Although he had painted as a child, it was during this period that he began pursuing it seriously. Feeling creatively constrained within the structures of classical music, he turned to painting as a more open and personal form of self-expression. Bognar’s paintings have been featured in several notable group exhibitions, including the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in 2023 and 2024. His most recent group show 'Betwixt' was in London, Mayfair at General Assembly.
