Artist: Nathan Casey (US)
Nathan Casey (b. 2003) is an American multidisciplinary artist whose practice is defined by the pursuit of calm and control. He paints imagined landscapes that describe his experiences interacting with California's natural coastline, where he's lived since birth. "Anxieties melt away in the presence of a grand landscape. I'm painting to seek control. Beginning abstract, I paint and scrape away only to repeat. I react to the decisions made in the moment, and what remains is an image that has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. Yet, it stands firm, having lived a life. I strive to make work that allows the viewer to sit with themselves in a quiet moment and reflect." Influenced by 19th-century Impressionism, he focuses on color relations and alla prima techniques. Equally as important is his relationship to traditional Chinese landscape painting, in which the artist painted from memory in an effort to capture the land's essence. Casey's use of color and non-plein air painting function as a device to explore his bi-racial identity (Chinese, White). He received his Bachelor's in Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2025 with a focus in painting, serigraphy, analog photography, and book arts. He is currently working out of his studio in Oakland, California.
