Artist: Emma Möhlenkamp (DE)

Emma Möhlenkamp (b. 2002) is a visual artist based in Cologne, Germany. Her work is shaped by a background in philosophy and social and cultural anthropology. Painting functions as a counterpoint to analytical thinking, a space where complexity can exist without being solved or proven. Her series Inner Spaces, Outer Places reflects this approach, capturing intimate viewpoints tied to significant memories from places around the world. Across her work, Möhlenkamp is drawn to the relationship between inner worlds and outward appearance. This is also explored through semi-realistic portraits, which focus on the depth of human expression, as well as through contemporary still lifes, where absence becomes a means of presence: What people leave behind, and how traces of order, chaos, or luxury can reveal something about their inner and social life. Working across approaches rather than within a fixed style or topic, Möhlenkamp embraces change and multiplicity. She considers herself a generalist rather than a specialist, though consistently returning to painting as her central medium.
