I am an oil painter living in regional Australia. The process really is about patience. Meditation. Not trying to prove anything. Not trying to prove I am a good painter, how much I can do, how detailed I can make it. Rather, how much energy can I embody in as few lines as possible. How can I say something that is complex and layered as simple as possible. That’s why a lot of my paintings rest in this middle ground of underdrawing. I love the energy of those first lines. They are honest. In a more specific sense, the work is about conveying monumentality through the everyday. Much like the saying, ‘The universe is contained in a grain of sand’, I believe everyday actions such as, meeting friends, taking care of family, looking to the sky and observing the birds fly above us are the big moments of our life. The great expanse of existence is a continuity through the ages. What is both precious and abundant, is our presence in this very moment. Traineau’s work carries a quiet mysticism: each piece hovers between apparition and disappearance, between physical surface and immaterial sensation.
