Born in East Germany prior to the Berlin Wall’s collapse, Denise Reichenbach brings a particular artistic sensibility to her work. A hybrid form of painting, drawing, collage and sculpture, her work swings between abstract and figurative composition, dealing with the complexity of human relationships. She incorporates strong references to her German background in history and art, but makes room for intuitive exploration through the conscious deskilling of her painterly technique.His work consists of process-oriented abstract paintings defined by their accumulative layers. Through intensive linework and obfuscated collage arise images both familiar yet unrecognisable. Merging ruminations on personal experience with imagery of an unfamiliar world to create scenes that are ambiguous and removed from their original context. These subjects cater to the free-associative nature of the mind while exploring evolving imagery related to the natural world, biomorphism, and the entheogenic experience.
